Foods for Your Moods - Health Guidance

When you're feeling "off" emotionally or physically ? cranky and irritable, tired, depressed, angry, or stressed out ? which "comfort foods" do you eat? If you tend to devour an entire bag of chips, or dive into that extra-large tub of Double Fudge Ripple Rocky Road ice cream, or skip food entirely and go for a stiff drink, you're probably perpetuating the very moods, lack of energy, or depression that you're trying to "treat."

In a very real sense, we are what we eat. An enormous body of scientific research is indicating that our American diet of processed foods, sugars, "bad" fats, and refined carbohydrates is not only bad for our physical health, it's bad for our mental and emotional health. According to these studies, adolescents with largely fast food and junk food diets are 79% more likely to suffer from depression. Adults who ate a diet high in trans fats were 42% more likely to be depressed.

So one of the best things we can do to treat "bad moods" is to eat the kind of balanced, nutritious diet that prevents them in the first place. That is, make sure your diet includes lots of brain-healthy foods such as lean meats, seafood, leafy greens, and whole grains. Skip the processed foods and the sugars, and don't be afraid of fats, especially the "good" fats, which actually help to protect the brain against mood disorders.

This all sounds good, but I'm cranky right now! What do I eat?

Good question. Our world is stressful, and no matter how balanced our normal diet is, every so often we're going to be hit with bouts of tiredness at inappropriate times (like when you have a report that you have to finish by the end of the work day), or periods of irritability and crankiness (which we try not to take out on co-workers and loved ones). What can we eat at such times to counteract the out-of-balance conditions our bodies and brains have gotten themselves into, and bring us back to a happier, more balanced state of mind and body?

The following suggestions have been gathered from nutritionists, food experts, doctors, and psychologists, and may be of help to you when your moods get you down:

? Eat more often. First, if you've found that your moods or energy levels "swing" a lot during the day, consider eating more often (every 4 to 5 hours), to provide both your body and your brain with the fuel they need to function properly.

? When you snack, eat "combination" snacks. That is, instead of just eating a sugary snack (which your body craves when its blood sugar gets low), eat a combination of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and sugars. For example, snack on nuts combined with fruits. Carbohydrates provide quick energy, but also tend to cause a "sugar crash" soon after eating them, which leaves you even more tired than before. Combining carbohydrates like vegetables or fruits with meats or nuts and some source of fats slows the digestive process, and keeps your blood sugar levels higher for longer.

? For tiredness, have a spinach salad. When you're tired and can't concentrate, skip the "quick cures" like coffee and head for the salad bar. Spinach contains high levels of folic acid, which boosts your homocysteine levels, and improves the flow of blood. So do other leafy green vegetables and foods such as cereals, potatoes, beans, peas, and mushrooms.

? Anxious or stressed out? Eat salmon. If you find yourself feeling worry or anxiety, it could mean that your body is low in the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Salmon ? whether at a sit-down restaurant or in the form of a salmon burger ? can boost your levels of these nutrients quickly.

? Feeling angry? Have a cup of green tea. Green tea is an excellent source of theanine, which improves concentration and focus while calming you down. Its low amounts of caffeine also won't increase the feelings of anger the way that coffee does.

? Eat dark chocolate to fight depression and anxiety. Even though eating chocolate sounds counter-intuitive when thinking about "eating for health," dark chocolate (not milk chocolate or white chocolate) contains serotonin (a natural antidepressant) and high amounts of flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants. Dark chocolate also reduces levels of the hormones that make you feel stressed out and anxious.

? Sad? Have an avocado. Avocados are high in antioxidants, vitamin C, and healthy fats that act as powerful "brain food," and can quickly lift your spirits.

? Depressed? Have a banana. Bananas are another good source of the natural antidepressant serotonin, as well as vitamin C, beta-carotene, and antioxidants. They also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which can reduce symptoms of anxiety or insomnia.

? For more energy and happiness, eat sunflower seeds. An excellent source of protein and nutrients such as selenium, vitamin E, and magnesium, sunflower seeds are also tasty and convenient. It's easy to add them to salads, or to just keep a bag of them in your desk handy for snacking.

? Just feeling blue? Have a few Brazil nuts. These nuts contain high amounts of the antioxidant selenium, which positively affects your moods. While you should eat them in moderation because they're high in unsaturated fats and calories, small portions can quickly counteract feelings of sadness, irritability, anxiety, or fatigue.

Pressure on Romney to pick Ryan as VP

NEW YORK (Reuters) - With Republican Mitt Romney on the verge of choosing a vice presidential running mate, conservatives have mounted a concerted campaign to boost the chances of Representative Paul Ryan, the architect of his party's controversial budget-cutting plan.

Often likening Ryan to Ronald Reagan, conservatives say the Wisconsin lawmaker's supposed drawbacks as a candidate - mostly stemming from the steep cuts in social safety net programs he has proposed - are actually strengths that could bring heft, content and perhaps a spark to Romney's campaign.

Romney, in an interview Thursday with NBC News, gave no indication who he might pick, but outlined what he was looking for in a running mate.

"I certainly expect to have a person that has a strength of character, a vision for the country that adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country," he said.

Despite the nation's economic problems, Romney trails President Barack Obama in most polls three months from the November 6 election, and may even be losing momentum. A Reuters/Ipsos poll this week gave Obama a 7-point lead (49 to Romney's 42 percent), up slightly from a month ago.

Particularly enthusiastic backers of Ryan are opinion writers for the East Coast's leading conservative publications - like the Wall Street Journal, the National Review and the Weekly Standard. As if on cue, many of them weighed in this week in support of Ryan, almost daring Romney to pick him instead of more conventional short-listers, such as former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty or Senator Rob Portman of Ohio.

The case against Ryan, 42, is that he is a lightning rod for criticism of the unpopular cuts in government health programs for the elderly and poor he proposed as chairman of the powerful House of Representatives Budget Committee

That is not a weakness, the conservatives argued, but a strength. They want Ryan's budget to be the issue and they want Ryan there to defend it.

Such a debate, they believe, could elevate the campaign beyond questions that are consuming it now, about Romney's unwillingness to disclose more than two years of tax returns for example, or his leadership of the investment firm, Bain Capital.

"Mr. Obama and the Democrats want to make this a small election over small things - Mitt's taxes, his wealth, Bain Capital," the Wall Street Journal editorialized Thursday as it pushed a Ryan choice.

"To win, Mr. Romney and the Republicans have to rise above those smaller issues and cast the choice as one about the overall direction and future of the country."

"Ryan is an ideologue in the best sense of the term," the National Review's Rich Lowry wrote in Politico. "He is motivated by ideas and knows what he believes and why. But he's not blinkered. He is an explainer and a persuader."

Romney has a choice to make - go with the tried and true, Portman or Pawlenty, or take a bit of a risk with Ryan, or look elsewhere. Many expect him to announce his choice soon, possibly as early as next week when he winds up a campaign trip in Portman's Ohio.

DEMOCRATS WELCOME RYAN

The risk of Ryan becomes apparent from talking with Democrats on Capitol Hill. While lawmakers and congressional aides from both parties use words like "smart," "telegenic," "young" and "exciting" to describe Ryan, Democrats seem him as a dream choice for different reasons.

"I would love for Romney to pick him," said one Democratic leadership aide. "It would crystallize everything for us. Just to have him on the ticket would even further elevate the Ryan budget."

That budget, which has been embraced by Romney, would reform the Medicare healthcare program for the elderly and disabled in a way that Democrats say would shift significant costs to those recipients. It also would cut deeply into other popular domestic programs, including education and the joint federal-state Medicaid healthcare program for the poor.

Another Democratic aide in Congress said if Ryan was the pick, "We could really with no effort wrap the Ryan budget around Romney." The aide added, "If he's not on the ticket we have to spend energy reminding folks" that Romney said he was in favor of Ryan's controversial budget.

Some Capitol Hill Republicans who support Ryan's proposals worry that the Democrats may be right about Ryan's impact.

"There is the practical political question as to whether or not we can truly win by being so blunt about the kind of changes most Republicans think have to be made to programs like Medicare," said a Republican aide who asked not to be named.

"It turns the election into an all-in bet," the aide said, adding, "The concern is that when you go all in, you can lose and be out of the game."

There's another concern as well: Ryan is the ultimate Washington insider in an anti-Washington era. He began his career in Congress as a congressional aide and has been in and around the Capitol most of the time since.

This week's editorials seemed in part designed to give Romney the courage to defy the conventional assessment of Ryan.

"That the hyper-cautious Romney is seriously considering him counts as one of the biggest surprises of a campaign almost entirely lacking in them. Picking Ryan would represent a Romney revolt against conventional wisdom. And appropriately so - since the conventional wisdom is wrong," National Review's Lowry wrote.

In the Weekly Standard, Bill Kristol and Stephen Hayes argued that the party "will be running on the Romney-Ryan plan no matter what. Having Paul Ryan on the ticket may well make it easier to defend the plan convincingly."

CLOSE TIES TO PAWLENTY

Will the pressure on Romney over his vice presidential choice matter in the end? Probably not, said former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, a Republican political analyst.

"None of it matters - the only criteria should be whether the pick can become president and whether the relationship between Romney and his selection is strong."

If Romney were to pick the one person from among his short list with whom he has the closest ties, it would be Pawlenty, who quickly endorsed Romney after dropping out of his own race for the Republican presidential nomination last year.

Pawlenty, well-liked within the Romney campaign, has been an active campaign stand-in for Romney and was stumping for him in Michigan on Thursday.

Pawlenty is popular among evangelical conservatives whose active support Romney will need. Yet many analysts cite the fact that he failed to generate much excitement for his own candidacy as a strike against naming him as the No. 2. In 2008, he was passed over by then-nominee John McCain for the vice presidency.

"We'll know soon enough," Pawlenty told a crowd in Jackson, Michigan, on Wednesday, according to ABC News. Romney, he said, has a rich pool of conservative talent from which to choose and as a result he "can't make a bad pick."

If there is a tortoise in the race, it could be Portman, a brainy former White House budget director and former U.S. trade representative.

Many in Washington think he is the odds-on favorite despite misgivings about his ties to the George W. Bush White House. Picking him could help turn the tide for Romney in Ohio, a state he desperately needs to win and where he now trails Obama.

There is a long list of candidates beside Ryan, Pawlenty and Portman for his vice presidential running mate, whose most critical task will be to go head-to-head in a debate against sitting Vice President Joe Biden in October.

Among them are Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnnell.

The campaign has made it clear that an announcement could come soon, but has been coy on exactly when, a strategy that keeps interest in the decision high. Many believe Romney will announce the pick next week when the Olympics are over and after a four-state bus tour that starts in Virginia on Saturday and ends Tuesday in Ohio.

The Cheese Pantry | Totally Dublin

You may have noticed The Cheese Pantry in Drumcronda as you?ve sat on the airport bus on your way to warmer and more affordable climes. It looks nice, doesn?t it? My friend Fiona and I made a trip out to Drumconrda on the Number 3 to see if it lived up to its welcoming exterior.

Fiona?s family home is but a half hour walk away and her local friends had raved about the restaurant to her before our trip. A tip they gave her was to look out for The American Waitress, who was said to know her wines and have a charming dose of stateside service awareness.

Imagine our joy when we were welcomed at the door by a friendly woman with a definitively American accent. We gave each other a sly thumbs up as she led us into the room.

The Cheese Pantry is a cheese shop, a cafe and a restaurant. It?s been with us since 2007 in the premises that was the Youkstetter Pork Butchers featured in Joyce?s Ulysses. As you come through the front door, past the few seats outside under a generous canopy, you?re greeted by walls of wines and chutneys, and your eye can?t help itself but focus on the cheese fridge, which is also packed full of cheese-based desserts. Our American Waitress led us through a long, bright hallway, at the end of which we could see the naturally lit and bright dining room.

We were there for the evening menu, where three courses are ?22 all night every night. The menu is local and seasonal, with a hefty choice to suit cheese lovers and cheese sceptics alike.

For starters, Fiona went for the Grilled Asparagus, which was wrapped in pancetta and drizzled with a lemon and caper butter while I had the Pressed Ham Hock Persadille which came with a mesculan salad and piccalilli. Both were simple and straightforward, yet devoured with aplomb.

Fiona kept it simple with the Chargrilled Hereford 10oz rib-eye steak while I went for the Roast Barberie Duck Breast. Fiona had ordered her steak medium-rare and although it arrived well on its way to medium-medium, it didn?t hide the fact that this was a quality piece of meat. I had a few mouthfuls and, being a crisp-loving gal, adored the pomme gaufrettes (a bit like posh crisps) while the accompanying garlic butter were more of a hit with Fiona.

Our American Waitress had told me upon ordering my duck that it would arrive pink and would that be ok with me? I replied I wouldn?t have it any other way. Which is why when it arrived I was a little disappointed that it wasn?t really very pink after all. It didn?t spoil my meal too much. One look at my empty plate after I?d scoffed the lot, including the accompanying herb mash, fine green beans and red onion marmalade, was testament to that.

For dessert, we went for the smaller 3 Cheese Board, which boasted a Wicklow blue, a brie and a pecorino alongside some grapes and oatcakes. Perhaps it was my duty to ask, but I would have liked our American Waitress to give us more information on the cheeses, it being The Cheese Pantry and all.

Our bill came to ?88.75 which included a bottle of Cotes du Rhone, at ?23 one of the cheaper on the extensive list. A good choice by our American Waitress.

I liked The Cheese Pantry very much. Simple, casual and enjoyable to hang out in. I would, however, like to see more provenance on the menu. The Cheese Pantry fit in to the category of small Irish businesses that have to work really bloody hard to survive. It would be great to see a list of their local suppliers on their menu. It?s a small point that would make a passionate Irish food lover return to The Cheese Pantry again and again, taking place alongside the locals that no doubt feel blessed to have such a lovely little spot at their disposal.
